As most departments, ours has it's origins as a 'Call' / 'Volunteer' department. Our present staffing still has more than 20 On-call and/or Volunteers on it's roster. While the department has many career members, we still rely on -and receive- much of our manpower during any event from the Call Department members. We are gifted in having a very competent membership -who are to be commended in their dedication in assisting the townspeople in mitigating their emergencies. Few people understand the amount of time and commitment involved to do this. Training, drilling and staying qualified, all demand hundreds of hours yearly. Being called out at any time, and during the worst of conditions, for what may be a quite unpleasant event -and doing so voluntarily- speaks highly to the level of dedication and sacrifices given by these few, to their neighbors and community. Such commitment to helping others is shared by most of our neighbors in Northborough. Many don't have the ability to dedicate the enormous amount of time needed to be a department member. This is understandable. There are a few that do have the time and interest in being a department member.
