S.A.F.E.
The Student Awareness of Fire
Education (S.A.F.E.) program provides funding from the state tobacco tax to
support fire departments throughout the state to deliver the message of fire safety
to
students. A competitive annual grant is awarded to communities that demonstrate effective
and innovative means of educating local schoolchildren. The department recently utilized
this funding to construct a fire and sprinkler demonstration trailer. This versatile
trailer is designed for live fire demonstrations that dramatically show the rapid nature
of fire development. The trailer clearly emphasizes the value of smoke detectors and
residential sprinkler systems.

The S.A.F.E. program as well provides for the use of a regional
"Fire-Safe House". Similar to the fire demonstration trailer, the Safe-House is
a child-oriented, trailer-mounted, simulated mobile-home. Furnished to resemble an average
home, it is the ideal interactive setting to teach and reinforce many fire safety habits.
The Safe-house is one of several currently shared among numerous local communities,
however as several more are purchased statewide, Northborough should expect greater
access.
